Tying the first fly

An honest report from a beginner with a vise, bad lighting, and not enough thread tension.

I bought a tying kit in March on the theory that the slow winter months were the right time to learn. I unboxed it in March. I started using it last week.

Vise, bobbin, way too much thread.

First attempt was a wooly bugger, which the YouTube videos all agree is the easiest fly in the world to tie. My version of it has the proportions of a small wet dog and a tail that came off the second I touched it. I will not be fishing with this fly.

Exhibit A.

Second attempt, also a wooly bugger, was meaningfully worse. I'm going to read a book before I attempt a third.

The vise is good. The thread is fine. The hands are the variable.
